ABOUT BEN
Ben Nunan is a writer with a serious passion for a good story.
If you are looking for a writer that is as much a maverick with story development and as creating compelling, engaging characters, then he is your man.
Series writer for Shot in the Dark Comics, Ben also takes on independent commissions. His clients include CNG comics, ACE comics and Nicholas Grabowsky. Highly-regarded for his work in character and concept/story development, Ben has frequently acted as consultant to fellow writers in these areas. Recent projects include development of a RoboNoir series, adapting a horror film into a graphic novel and script development for a British feature film.
Growing up in Dundee, Scotland, Ben avidly read stories of adventure such as the Brothers Grimm, The Hobbit, Moby Dick and was fanatical about space stories and sci-fi unlike most of his classmates. He loved them not only because they were fantastical tales, but because they weren’t the mainstream stories that everyone else was reading; he wanted stories and characters that he could make his own.
A promising writer from the outset, Ben was poetry.com’s Young Poet of the Year in 2001. Graduating with double honours in Film & Television Production with Business Management, Ben worked in TV production and developed screenplays for short films. Pursuing his passion for writing, he then went on to beat 1.6 million other comic writers to make it to the final shortlist for Futuremarks Online Competition, which launched him into the international arena.
It was when Ben came across Marvel’s Union Jack that the game changed – here was a British superhero without any real powers, just a normal guy with a knife and a gun who was taking on vampires. From this, grew a love for creating characters that go against the grain, giving readers something a bit different from the norm…with the idea that just perhaps they might find what they’re looking for in the most unexpected of places.
Ben started writing for comics because he wanted to bring new stories to people, lend his hand to what had become a bit of a stale industry and provide a new perspective. In a world where we are being told increasingly that there are no more adventures to be had and the future is bleak, Ben hopes to give readers a glimpse of another world where everything is still possible – a sense of escapism that makes them feel good as well as taking them on a great adventure, told with wit and populated with believable characters that the readers can engage with.
“I don’t want a statue or wikipedia page, I want to leave my stories behind and have them retold. Politics, people, events…a tale with a purpose should outlast everything. After all, if you take away everything else, you can still tell a story.”
